EU Council appoints Iliana Ivanova as new European Commissioner

The Council today appointed Iliana Ivanova (Bulgaria) as new European Commissioner, by common accord with the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. MEPs supported review of the Court of Justice Statute

The first part of the review aims to improve efficiency of judicial proceedings by transferring jurisdiction over requests for preliminary rulings in specific areas such as common VAT system, excise duties, greenhouse gas emission allowance trading or compensation for passengers to the General Court. This would improve the workload of the Court, since such requests represent on average 20% of all requests.
