Screening of foreign investments in the Union – EP Think Tank
On 24 January 2024, the European Commission published a legislative proposal under the ordinary legislative procedure for a new regulation on the screening of foreign investments in the Union.It seeks to revise and repeal Regulation (EU) 2019/452 establishing a framework for the screening of foreign direct investments into the Union.

Philip Schotland appointed as new Swiss Liaison Prosecutor at Eurojust
Philip Schotland took up his duties as the new Liaison Prosecutor for Switzerland at Eurojust today. He succeeds Mr Sébastien Fetter, with whom Mr Schotland previously worked as Deputy Liaison Prosecutor.

EU Commission clears acquisition of Eurobio Scientific by IK Partners and NextStage
The EU Commission has approved under the EU Merger Regulation the acquisition of joint control of Eurobio Scientific SA , based in France, by IK Investment Partners, based in Luxembourg, and NextStage AM, based in France. The transaction mainly concerns the pharmaceutical diagnostics products and services sector.

EU Commission approves reintroduction of Polish credit union liquidation scheme
The EU Commission has approved the reintroduction of a Polish credit union liquidation scheme, including a budget increase by €770 million (PLN 3.3 billion). The purpose of the scheme is to facilitate the orderly liquidation of credit unions operating in Poland. The scheme will run until September 2025.

Irregular migration from Africa: EU Auditors ask if root causes are well addressed
Migration flows from Africa to the EU have fluctuated over the years, peaking in 2014-2016. In October 2015, the European Commission created the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa (EUTF) to address the root causes of irregular migration, instability, and internal displacements in Africa, and to coordinate the response of EU member states.

Uber’s EU-US drivers’ data transfers: CCIA Europe statement
The Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP) announced that it is imposing a fine of €290 million on Uber, arguing that the company’s transfers of drivers’ personal data from the European Union to the United States were in breach of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
