The European Commission transferred today, in the interest of the service, Hubert Gambs to the position of Deputy Director-General in charge of Digital Transformation, Justice and Consumers to its Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers (DG JUST). This department promotes social justice by upholding the rule of law and protecting individual rights and freedoms in the European Union. It develops and implements policies on Justice, Fundamental Rights, and Consumers, in line with the Commission’s priorities. This decision takes effect on 16 February.
With over 25 years of experience within the European Commission, Mr Gambs brings extensive expertise across a broad range of policy areas, including the internal market, maritime affairs and regional policy. He has made significant contributions to initiatives that led to the modernisation and digitalisation of the Single Market, enhancing consumer protection and market benefits across the EU. Mr Gambs has also demonstrated strong coordination, policy-steering and stakeholder-management skills by leading the development and implementation of maritime and fisheries initiatives, strengthening regional cooperation and advancing sustainable economic and environmental objectives. His extensive senior management experience, combined with his in-depth knowledge of digital transformation and consumer protection, provides him with a solid background to coordinate his new Directorates.
Mr Gambs, an Austrian national, currently serves as Deputy Director-General in the Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW). He previously held the position of Director for the Modernisation of the Single Market within the same Directorate-General. Prior to this, he served as Director responsible for the Mediterranean and Black Sea in the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE). Before joining the European Commission in 1996, Mr Gambs worked at the Austrian Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs.
