Sub-Committee on Security and Defence and Committee on Foreign Affairs will review the impact of President Biden’s European tour on EU-US relations.

MEPs will exchange views with Dr Amanda Sloat, Special Assistant to President Biden and Senior Director for Europe in the National Security Council of the United States. Dr Sloat was part of the delegation that accompanied Joe Biden on his recent visit to Europe.

The meeting is organised in association with the European Parliament’s Delegation for relations with the United States.

Background

The EU and the US held their first summit in seven years in Brussels on 15 June 2021. The visit to Europe was President Biden’s first overseas trip since taking office on 20 January 2021. During his eight day trip, the US President attended the Group of Seven (G7) summit on 11 – 13 June in Cornwall (United Kingdom), followed by a NATO leaders’ summit in Brussels on 14 June, the EU-US summit on 15 June, and, on 16 June, a summit in Geneva (Switzerland) with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
