Brussels, 2 December 2024
On December 1, the new Single European Sky (SES2+) regulation entered into force, marking a step forward towards a more efficient and sustainable European airspace.
This new regulation aims to encourage air navigation service providers to achieve efficiency gains and adopt modern technologies, in order to reduce congestion in European airspace and provide better quality services. It also aims to promote innovation and the development of new services in the sector.
The regulation will help alleviate air congestion situations, such as those that disrupted air travel this summer, with almost one in two flights experiencing delays, in particular due to congestion in European airspace.
In addition, the regulation aims to reduce the environmental impact of flights by setting climate and environmental performance targets for air navigation service providers and encouraging airlines to adopt more sustainable practices through a fair pricing system. The effective implementation of the Regulation will depend on the creation of implementing measures by the Commission, which will be adopted after agreement with the Member States.
