As Europe aims for climate neutrality by 2050, modernising the grid to integrate renewable energy sources and manage decentralised energy production is crucial. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and generative AI (GenAI) are revolutionising Europe’s energy systems, by optimising the integration of renewables and enhancing grid management, while supporting the EU’s climate goals and enhancing competitiveness.
At the recent workshop organised by DG CONNECT and DG ENER on 20 September 2024, experts discussed how AI can enable smarter grid management by predicting energy consumption and production patterns. The workshop also emphasised the economic benefits of AI, particularly its ability to shorten grid connection times, attract investments and ultimately reduce energy bills for consumers.
By fostering collaboration and investing in advanced grid technologies, Europe can make green technologies more affordable and boost its global competitiveness. Incorporating Internet of Things (IoT) devices and edge computing further enhances grid management. Experts also discussed several challenges related to data and cybersecurity.
The workshop concluded on a positive note, emphasising the collective effort that is needed to overcome challenges and fully harness AI’s potential to transform Europe’s energy infrastructure.
