IEA report launch: From Taking Stock to Taking Action: How to implement the COP28 energy goals

24 September

Report launch

Paris, France

Background information

At the COP28 climate conference last December, nearly 200 countries agreed on ambitious global energy goals – pledging to achieve net zero emissions in the energy sector by 2050, transition away from fossil fuels, triple renewable energy capacity by 2030, double the rate of energy efficiency improvements, and accelerate the deployment of other low-emissions technologies. This report examines what fully implementing these transformative goals would mean for the global energy system and emissions.

It also explores the risks of partial implementation, which would jeopardise international efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 °C. And it discusses how countries can integrate the COP28 goals into their next round of targets under the Paris Agreement, emphasizing the importance of translating these objectives into domestic energy policies.

The launch of the report coincides with Climate Week NYC and the UN General Assembly, alongside which the IEA and COP29 Presidency will host the third in a series of High-Level Energy Transition Dialogues ahead of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
