During its constitutive meeting on Tuesday, the Committee on Constitutional Affairs elected Sven Simon (EPP, DE) as its Chair, as well as four Vice-Chairs to complete the committee bureau. Members elected the following MEPs, who now constitute the committee’s bureau, for a two-and-a-half year mandate.

Chair: Sven Simon (EPP, DE)

First Vice-Chair: Gabriele Bischoff (S&D, DE)

Second Vice-Chair: Adrián Vazquez Lazara (EPP, ES)

Third Vice-Chair: Charles Goerens (Renew, LU)

Fourth Vice-Chair: Péter Magyar (EPP, HU)

Candidates were elected by acclamation, except for the Fourth Vice-Chair, who received 18 votes in favour and five against, with one abstention, in a secret electronic vote. A recording of the meeting is available on Parliament’s Multimedia Centre.

Next steps

The first ordinary meeting of the committee after the summer break is planned for 4 September.

Background

In the tenth legislature, the Constitutional Affairs Committee has 30 full and 28 substitute members. Their responsibilities will revolve around institutional aspects of European integration, the implementation of the Treaties, the institutional consequences of changes in the Union’s membership, interinstitutional relations at EU level, European electoral procedures, the work of political parties and foundations at European level, the determination of the existence of a serious and persistent breach by a country of the common principles of the EU, and the amendment, interpretation, and application of Parliament’s Rules of Procedure.
