From today to Thursday, Vice-President for Values and Transparency Věra Jourová visits Los Angeles and San Francisco for meetings with leaders in the technology, creative and media sectors, focusing on the impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) and safeguarding elections against disinformation and malign foreign interference.
She will meet the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, in the margins of the California Summit on Generative AI to exchange on digital policy. She will also meet with representatives of social media platforms to discuss their preparedness against manipulative behaviour, risks stemming from AI, and their efforts to comply with EU digital laws and codes, such as the EU Codes of Practice on Disinformation and the EU Code of Conduct on Countering Hate Speech Online, especially ahead of the upcoming European Parliament elections taking place on 6-9 June. In addition, she will also discuss the viability of the media and creative sectors in the digital age, as fundamental pillars of democratic societies.
The visit is part of Vice-President’s Democracy Tour during which she has travelled throughout the EU to encourage efforts to protect elections against interference and disinformation.
In Los Angeles, the Vice President meets with senior management members at Warner Bros. Studios, journalists and representatives of the Los Angeles Times, and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TikTok. She also visits the Ukrainian Culture Center where she meets the Consul General of Ukraine, as well as leaders of Ukrainian organisations.
In San Francisco, she will equally meet the CEOs of Google, Meta, social media platform ‘X’, YouTube, as well as Netflix, among others. The Vice-President will also have a series of meetings with tech experts and researchers.
The Vice-President will deliver a keynote speech at an event on promoting competition in the AI sector co-hosted by the US Department of Justice and the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. You can register to follow the livestream here.
