EU VP Schinas and Commissioner Johansson in Madrid for the EU Remembrance Day for Victims of Terrorism

11 March

Brussels, 8 March 2023

On Monday, the Commission is organising and hosting the 20th EU Remembrance Day for Victims of Terrorism, in the presence of Vice-President for Promoting our European Way of Life, Margaritis Schinas and Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, King Felipe and Queen Leticia of Spain, and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

This Day was first established to pay tribute to the victims of terrorism in the aftermath of the Madrid attacks of 11 March 2004. Each year since, Europe shows solidarity with victims of terrorism, as well as unity and resilience against terrorism and violent extremism. Above all, this ceremony is an opportunity to listen to the testimonies of victims and survivors. Their voices are powerful and necessary in the fight against terrorism and radicalisation.

The ceremony will be transmitted online at +/- 11:00 CET and can be followed here.

The European Union is committed to combating terrorism and supporting the victims of terrorist attacks. In 2020, a Counter-Terrorism Agenda was adopted to set out the way forward for actions to counter terrorism at EU level, to better anticipate, prevent, protect and respond to the terrorist threat.  To support victims and survivors, the Commission has worked to guarantee the existence of a legal framework. This includes the Victims’ Rights Directive and the Directive on Combating Terrorism and the EU Strategy on victims’ rights (2020-2025), ensuring full rights for crime victims across Europe.
