EU Commissioner Schmit to participate in European Year of Skills events

This week, Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, Nicolas Schmit, will attend two skills-related events in Brussels: the 2024 Skills Summit “Skills for the future: Building bridges to new opportunities”, organised by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), as well as the Meet the Champions of Excellence event, jointly organised by the European Economic and Social Committee and the European Commission.

The 2024 OECD Skills Summit is a two-day event bringing together national ministers, policymakers, industry leaders, educators, and other experts from around the world to share best practices and discuss skills development in Europe. On 21 February at 10:00, Commissioner Schmit will deliver a keynote speech that highlights what more Member States can do to build on experience and strengthen their skills systems, bringing about the skills revolution needed in Europe to address labour shortages and remain competitive.

On 23 February, Commissioner Schmit will participate in the plenary session of the Meet the Champions of Excellence event. This event aims to inspire young people to consider vocational education and training. Up to 40 EU Champions from international skills competitions like WorldSkills, EuroSkills, and Abylimpics, in more than 20 disciplines ranging from mechanical engineering to health and social care, will showcase and share their experiences and achievements with 400 young participants.

These events are part of the European Year of Skills and aim to improve skills development and promote targeted training and continuous learning in Europe.
