The 57th meeting of the European Economic Area (‘EEA’) Council took place in Brussels on 20 November 2023.

The EEA Council discussed the overall functioning of the EEA Agreement and held an orientation debate on economic security.

The meeting was chaired by Ms Dominique Hasler, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Education and Sport of Liechtenstein. It was attended by Mr Pascual Ignacio Navarro Ríos, Spanish Secretary of State for the European Union; Mr Bjarni Benediktsson, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iceland, and Mr Espen Barth Eide, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway; as well as by Executive Vice President Šefčovič and representatives of the European External Action Service.

Political dialogue

The meeting of the EEA Council was preceded by an informal political dialogue with the EEA EFTA states. The discussions focused on Israel/Palestine and on Russia/Ukraine.
