Brussels, 3 May 2023

Tomorrow, Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, will be in Zagreb, Croatia, to co-chair the Ministerial Conference on Sustainable Urban Development of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM).

At the Conference, Commissioner Ferreira will discuss with Member States and other UfM members about delivering and boosting sustainable urban development in the Euro-Mediterranean Sea region and the UfM’s contribution to the UN New Urban Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Amongst the participants will be the Deputy Prime Minister of Physical Planning, Construction and State Assets of Croatia, Branko Bačić, as host of the event, and Minister for Public Works and Housing of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Taawfiq Abuelsamen, co-chairing the meeting with the Commissioner.

A Ministerial Declaration on ‘Implementing the UfM Strategic Urban Action Plan’ will be adopted during the Conference.

It will feed into the review of Sustainable Development Goal 11, namely ‘Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable’ taking place at the High-Level Political Forum in July 2023 in New York.

The Declaration underlines the continued political support and resolve for active participation to the ongoing implementation process of the Union for the Mediterranean Urban Agenda and supporting the implementation of the UfM Strategic Urban Action Plan.

The UfM is an intergovernmental institution co-presided by the EU, bringing together 27 Member States and 16 southern neighbour countries to promote dialogue and cooperation.
