Answer given by President von der Leyen
on behalf of the European Commission
(18.4.2023)

The Commission is convinced that recent trends in migration have made it more important than ever to put in place a balanced, sustainable and effective EU migration system. The legislation proposed under the New Pact on Migration and Asylum1 offers the right approach, a European answer to a European problem. The Commission will continue to support the realisation of the roadmap agreed by the European Parliament and the Council to ensure the adoption of the package before the 2024 European elections.

While these negotiations continue, the EU and its Member States can already take a wide range of operational steps to maximise the potential of the current regime. The Commission set these out in detail, including before the plenary on 1 February 2023. Central to these efforts is the work on strong external borders and effective border infrastructure which benefits from major EU funding under the Border Management and Visa Instrument. This work has seen a major intensification under the current Commission, always in full respect of fundamental rights. All Members of College have the full confidence of the President and the College as a whole.
