On Thursday, 16 March from 10.00 CEST, lead MEP Antonius Manders will brief journalists and answer questions on the upcoming report on the environmental crime directive proposal.
The draft directive aims to provide harmonized definitions of criminal offenses against environment and related sanctions for individuals and companies in the EU. The draft report by rapporteur Antonius Manders (EPP, NL), once adopted by the Legal Affairs Committee and confirmed in the plenary, will represent the Parliament’s position for the negotiations with the member states on the final text of the legislation.
The rapporteur will brief journalists ahead of the committee vote, scheduled on 21 March 2023, and will answer questions on Parliament’s position on the file and next steps of the procedure.
The on-the-record briefing will be held on Thursday, 16 March, from 10.00 CEST, online via Webex in English and for media representatives only.
Background
The European Commission introduced its proposal to boost the protection of the environment though criminal law in December 2021 in reaction to the rising number of environmental criminal offences. The aim of the proposal is to create a level playing field in this area across member states by providing a shared framework for recognising and sanctioning environmental crime.
