The European Commission has decided today to appoint Mikko Huttunen as Principal Legal Adviser in the Trade Team in the Legal Service. The role of the Legal Service is to provide legal advice to the Commission and its services, and to represent the Commission in all court cases. The date of effect of this appointment is to be determined later.

Mikko Huttunen, a Finnish national, brings with him over 20 years of experience in the Legal Service as well as his robust expertise of trade dispute settlement. He will also draw on his strong experience in representing the Commission at the European Court of Justice as well as on his established leadership skills and thorough knowledge of EU policies and current legal issues.

Mikko Huttunen is currently Legal Adviser and Deputy to the Director of the Team ‘Internal market, Energy, Industry and the Environment’. Prior to that, he was Legal Adviser of the Team ‘Trade Policy and the WTO’. From 2010 until 2016, he was Minister Counsellor – Legal Adviser in the Permanent mission of the EU to the World Trade Organization, where he was in charge of managing the WTO dispute settlement team and represented the EU in front of various WTO bodies. From 2000 until 2010, he served as a Member of the Legal Service. Before joining the Commission in 1996, he was a Researcher in the field of European Community Law, Labour Law and Sports Law.
