Norway limits collective protection to fewer Ukrainians

For two and a half years, the vast majority of people arriving from Ukraine have received temporary collective protection in Norway without individual consideration of each application by the authorities. Now, applications from people from areas in Ukraine that the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) assesses as safe will be handled according to the ordinary regulations for asylum. This currently applies to six areas.

Energy Security: EU Commission and IEA announce new support for Ukraine (updated)

The IEA and the EU presented today ten key energy actions to help safeguard Ukraine’s fragile energy security through the coming winter and beyond. 80% of Ukraine’s thermal plants have been destroyed, and a third of its hydropower capacity. “So this is where we will concentrate our repair efforts, with the aim of restoring 2.5 gigawatts of capacity this winter. Defence of Ukraine: Renew Europe calls for weapons restrictions to be lifted

Countries supplying defence systems to Ukraine must lift restrictions on the use of weapons in order to allow strikes on legitimate targets within Russia’s territory. The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament reminds that these restrictions hamper the ability of Ukraine to effectively counter Russian attacks on its cities and infrastructure, which increase the already staggering civilian death toll.

Russia: EU Council prolongs individual sanctions for a further six months

The EU Council decided today to prolong the restrictive measures targeting those responsible for undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine for another six months, until 15 March 2025. The measures provide for travel restrictions, the freezing of assets, and a ban on making funds or other economic resources available to the listed individuals and entities.

Ukraine: Polish Centre for Eastern Studies on the recent government reshuffle

On 5 September, Ukraine’s parliament (Verkhovna Rada, VR) appointed 10 new ministers, including two deputy prime ministers (see Appendix 1). The previous day, six ministers and the head of the State Property Fund (SPF) had tendered their resignations, with one ministry being dissolved. Russia: EEAS Statement on illegal Russian elections in Ukrainian territories

Russia conducted partial regional and local elections, including in the illegally annexed Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol. The European Union strongly condemns these so-called “elections” by Russia on Ukrainian territory. They constitute another act of violation of international law, the UN Charter and Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.
