The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament welcomes the EU Chips Act announced today by the European Commission. We believe that semiconductors are the foundation of our future economy, and we need to invest to secure access to these technologies.

Only a small proportion of semiconductor chips are made in EU, and this proposal is a major milestone toward EU open strategic autonomy as it will rebalance the value chain and limit our vulnerability to shortage or foreign context.

This strategy should also help place the EU at the forefront of the innovation race, by supporting quality jobs and investments in Research and Development.

MEP Martina DLABAJOVÁ (ANO 2011, Czechia) is the coordinator of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE)

“We simply cannot miss the global race for microchips. If we want digital and green transition to become a reality in the EU, we must do everything we can to make our industries operate without any disruptions caused by dependencies from third countries and global shortages. Therefore, we welcome the EU Chips Act, that secures, in particular, to pool our efforts and investments in research and development, bridging labs with manufacturers to deliver the next generation chips in the EU.”
