The Chair of AGRI Norbert Lins (EPP, DE) issued the following statement after a remote meeting with the US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack on Monday.

“I am thankful that US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack accepted our invitation to join us in our Agriculture and Rural Development Committee meeting today. It was attentive of him to find the time to exchange best practices across the Atlantic on improving EU-US cooperation. We had a fruitful discussion on our renewed transatlantic relations, the impact of trade on our agricultural sectors and the challenges for our farmers.

After the first meeting with the Chair of the Agriculture Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives David Scott in March 2021, I am convinced that strong EU-US cooperation does not only benefit farmers on both sides, but it also encourages to find ways in jointly tackling the challenging topic of climate change. Jointly, we will find a solution to maximise the support our farmers and rural areas need, which are the backbone of our society.”

Background

On Monday, the US Secretary of Agriculture virtually met the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development.

The agriculture MEPs discussed how to achieve a productive, more sustainable, and profitable agriculture sector and foster EU-US relations.

They also exchanged views on the recent deal between the European Union and the United States to end the dispute over subsidies to rival plane manufacturers Airbus and Boeing and phase out sanctions that damage EU farmers.
