A draft text to be debated in plenary calls for all internet-connected products for consumers or industrial use such as machines, sensors, industrial components and networks that make up the Internet of Things to be made secure-by-design, resilient to cyber incidents, and quickly patched when vulnerabilities are discovered. To achieve it, the Commission should table proposals in this direction. The text also demands legislation imposing cybersecurity requirements for applications, software, embedded software and operating systems by 2023.
MEPs warn that hybrid threats are increasing and are becoming more sophisticated, including through the use of disinformation campaigns and cyberattacks on infrastructure, economic processes and democratic institutions. They fear the impact on elections, legislative procedures, law enforcement and justice, and point to the risk of fragmented regulation across member states.
The EU needs to strengthen its strategic autonomy in cybersecurity, by reducing Europe’s technological dependence on – and skills gap with – the rest of the world, insist MEPs. They also see an opportunity in this to strengthen the European industry.
The resolution comes in response to the EU’s Cybersecurity Strategy for the Digital Decade.
