Statement by European Commission President on the new Hungarian bill that discriminates against people based on their sexual orientation:

“This Hungarian bill is a shame.

I have instructed the responsible commissioners to send a letter to express our legal concerns before the bill enters into force.

This bill clearly discriminates against people based on their sexual orientation. It goes against the fundamental values of the European Union. Human dignity, equality and respect for human rights.

We will not compromise on these principles.

I have said it before: I believe in a European Union where you are free to be who you are and love whomever you want.

I believe in a Europe which embraces diversity.

I will use all the powers of the Commission to ensure that the rights of all EU citizens are guaranteed. Whoever they are and where ever they live within the European Union.”

Background remarks by the editorial staff:

Hungary’s parliament has passed a law tabled by the Orban government, in June, banning homosexual people from featuring in school materials or TV shows and spots for people under 18. The law was approved by 157 MPs, including those from the ruling Fidesz party. The opposition boycotted the vote, except the far-right Jobbik party.
