Forest Monitoring in Europe – Perspectives and current discussions

13 May

The Bavarian State Minister for European and International Affairs, Eric Beißwenger, hosts an event on:

Forest Monitoring in Europe – Perspectives and current discussions

on Tuesday, 13 May 2025, 6.30 pm (Admission and registration start at 6.00 pm)

at the Representation of the Free State of Bavaria to the European Union, Rue Wiertz 77, 1000 Brussels, Belgium

Europe’s forests are facing unprecedented challenges due to climate change: dryness and drought, storms, forest fires, insect calamities and much more are jeopardising our forests and thus their functions, from the provision of resources to biodiversity and climate protection. European forest owners are confronted with rising costs for forest maintenance, unclear future prospects for forestry and growing bureaucratic burdens.

This complex situation raises the question of whether coordinated European forest monitoring can offer real added value. To what extent are Europe’s forest ecosystems actually under threat and what are the main challenges? What advantages could a european monitoring system offer and where do supra-regional concepts reach their limits? Can EU-wide monitoring be harmonised with national forest policies and local conditions? Can such a monitoring system help European forest owners and regions in forest management and conservation? Or are further bureaucratic burdens threatening to hinder sustainable forest management and the urgent establishment of climate-stable forests?

We would like to debate all these and other questions with political representatives and experts in a panel discussion in order to develop recommendations for sustainable forest management.

An event with (among others):

Eric Beißwenger, Bavarian State Minister for European and International Affairs

Christine Singer, MEP (Renew), Member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, European Parliament

Stefan Köhler, MEP (EVP), Member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, European Parliament
