The Commission approved the addition of ‘Bohusläns blåmusslor’ as Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and ‘Kullings kalvdans‘ as Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), from Sweden.

‘Bohusläns blåmusslor’ are the blue mussels cultivated in the archipelago around Bohuslän. They are grown on freely hanging lines without the mussels having contact with the sea floor. As a result, ‘Bohusläns blåmusslor’, unlike several other types of mussels present on the market, are free from sand and clay. They have a fresh smell of sea and seaweed, with hints of nuts and a fresh taste with noticeable notes of umami, nuts and crab. The cultivation of ‘Bohusläns blåmusslor’ is based on the sustainable management of the blue mussel population and requires growers to have knowledge of the natural conditions of the ‘Bohusläns blåmusslor’ production area.

‘Kullings kalvdans’ is an oven-baked product produced from bovine colostrum, which is sold plain or flavoured with cinnamon or cardamom. Production takes place using methods derived from the old tradition in Västergötland of making kalvdans from colostrum only. In 2013, the producers received an award from Gastronomiska Akademin for preserving this tradition. In order for ‘Kullings kalvdans’ to have the correct characteristics, the colostrum used is obtained exclusively from local farms in Västra Götaland. The dairy workers’ ability to mix colostrum that has different levels of protein and cream is crucial to the texture, consistency and taste of ‘Kullings kalvdans’.

These new denominations will be added to the list of 1,632 agricultural products already protected. The list of all protected geographical indications can be found in the eAmbrosia database. More information is available online at Quality Schemes and on our GIView portal.
