eTwinning, the EU’s flagship initiative for cross-border school collaboration, connecting teachers with each other, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Over 160,000 projects have reached over 3 million pupils within the eTwinning community during these two decades, with the help of over 1.2 million teachers from 295,000 schools. Some examples of these projects are the European prize winning projects 2024, which have benefited children from kindergarten up to upper secondary education by opening up their classes to peers from other countries.

eTwinning aims to make learning without borders accessible for all teachers and students. It continuously innovates on classroom practices and in promoting digital literacy and active citizenship. By connecting teachers with each other, it helps foster inclusive, high-quality education through mutual learning across the EU and beyond.

The initiative has expanded over the years, welcoming new member countries and introducing new features, such as online courses and European Quality Labels. It is also now accessible to student teachers in the initial steps of their education. The ‘eTwinning for future teachers’ initiative has shown how the platform helps the development of new generations of teachers by promoting exchanges and discussions between teachers from other countries and other education systems, and allowing teachers to discover and implement cross-curricular and project teaching.

eTwinning is part of the European School Education Platform, an online space that connects schools in 46 countries. 400,000 users receive a regular newsletter about the latest platform content and upcoming activities. Since its launch in January 2005, eTwinning has supported teachers and schools in developing national and international projects in a safe online environment. Since 2014, eTwinning has been supported by the Erasmus+ programme, linking with other EU initiatives that offer opportunities for schools and educators.
