Brussels, 3 February 2025

Today, the EU Commission awarded the prestigious Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP) Seal to the multilingual AI project OpenEuroLLM – the first Digital Europe Programme funded project to receive the seal.

STEP is a new EU initiative to enhance European industrial competitiveness by supporting critical technologies, including artificial intelligence. The awarding of a STEP Seal is an EU mark of excellence, aimed at helping projects in accessing additional EU funds, while boosting their investment profile of projects that receive the Seal.

OpenEuroLLM is working on what will be the first family of open-source Large Language Models that cover all official and future EU languages. Bringing together EU startups, research labs and supercomputing hosting entities, the project intends to train these AI models on European supercomputers – all while reflecting European values of transparency, openness and accessibility in compliance with the AI Act.

OpenEuroLLM has a total budget of €37.4 million of which €20.6 million comes from the Digital Europe Programme.

STEP Seals are awarded to projects that meet the quality requirements in the calls for proposals under five programmes funded by the EU budget, including the Digital Europe Programme. Projects receiving the seal are displayed on the Commission’s STEP portal, and receive a dedicated tag on the InvestEU Portal.
