Brussels, 13 December 2024

Today, the Commission has received the third payment request from Malta for €48.7 million in grants (net of pre-financing), under the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).

Malta’s third payment request concerns 11 milestones and 13 targets. It covers reforms that support improvements in the waste collection system, increase the number of people with access to free public transport, enhance the quality and inclusiveness of education, foster digital skills, implement a neonatal hearing screening program, and strengthen Malta’s anti-money laundering framework.

The request also covers important investments in areas including renovation of public schools, medical equipment for the health system, digitisation of the justice system, and the provision of electric vehicles for the private and public sectors.

The Commission will now assess Malta’s fulfilment of the milestones and targets linked to this payment request. It will then share its preliminary assessment with the Council’s Economic and Financial Committee.

Malta’s overall Recovery and Resilience Plan will be financed by €328.2 millions in grants, with €69.9 million allocated to REPowerEU, the European initiative to phase out Russian fossil fuel imports. More information on the Maltese plan is available online.
