From 24 to 25 September 2024, a delegation from the Supreme Court of the United States of America paid an official visit to the Court of Justice of the European Union as part of the ‘Luxembourg Forum’.
The delegation consisted of Mr John G. Roberts, Jr (Chief Justice), Ms Elena Kagan (Associate Justice), Mr Stephen G. Breyer (Associate Justice (Ret.)), accompanied by Mr Robert M. Dow, Jr. (Counselor to the Chief Justice), His Excellency Mr Thomas M. Barrett (Ambassador of the United States to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg), as well as Prof. Dr. Armin von Bogdandy (Director of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, Heidelberg) and Prof. Daniel Halberstam (Director of the European Legal Studies Program at the University of Michigan).
The delegation, welcomed by Mr Koen Lenaerts, President of the Court of Justice of the European Union, first attended a general presentation of the Court and the EU’s judicial system before taking part in a working session with members of the Court of Justice on the subject of ‘Recent trends and developments in judicial management and procedures’. The members of the Supreme Court also attended a hearing before the Grand Chamber of the Court of Justice.
The second day of the visit included two working sessions devoted respectively to ‘The rule of law and the protection of judicial independence’ and ‘The protection of privacy in the digital economy’.
The delegation’s programme ended with an audience with His Royal Highness the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, and a visit to the Chamber of Deputies.
The visit served to strengthen the close and historic ties between the Supreme Court of the United States and the Court of Justice of the European Union, continuing the regular meetings that have taken place since 1998.
