Prime Minister of Finland Sanna Marin, Prime Minister of Sweden Magdalena Andersson and Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen have sent a letter to President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen about the current energy situation. In their letter, they expressed their support for the plans announced by the Commission on 7 September and presented their common priorities for measures to lower energy prices.
The Prime Ministers stressed the importance of taking the measures needed to curb the price of gas and stabilise the energy derivatives market. They also expressed their support for coordinated EU-wide measures to reduce energy consumption. In addition, the Prime Ministers underlined the importance of accelerating the green transition, which is the best way to improve energy security and phase out fossil fuels from Russia.
The Prime Ministers reiterated that the current energy crisis is due to Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine. As part of this attack, Russia is also waging an energy war against the whole of Europe.
