Berlin, 8 May 2025
Statement by the Spokesperson of the Federal Government, Stefan Kornelius:
This evening, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and U.S. President Donald Trump spoke by telephone. President Trump congratulated the Chancellor on his assumption of office. Chancellor Merz assured the U.S. President that, 80 years after the end of the Second World War, the United States remains an indispensable friend and partner to Germany.
President Trump and Chancellor Merz agreed on close cooperation with the aim of ending the war in Ukraine. The Chancellor echoed the President’s call for a swift end to the killing in Ukraine. Russia must now agree to a ceasefire in order to open space for negotiations. Trump stated he would strongly support Germany’s efforts—together with France, the United Kingdom, Poland, and other European partners—to achieve lasting peace.
At the same time, President Trump and Chancellor Merz agreed on the need to swiftly resolve ongoing trade disputes. Both leaders committed to close consultation and announced reciprocal visits to the United States and Germany.
