The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Minister for the Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion welcome the work embarked on during the first session of intergovernmental negotiations with a view to a future treaty on the elimination of plastic pollution. They confirm that France will host a second session of negotiations at the end of May 2023.
The first session of the intergovernmental committee for negotiating a treaty on the elimination of plastic pollution drew to a close in Punta del Este (Uruguay) on 2 December. The session brought together nearly 1,400 people, including representatives of more than 160 States and around 850 members of civil society.
The session provided an opportunity for States to specify their ambitions for the future agreement, which must be set as high as possible. The European Union and France have pressed the case for the adoption of a treaty covering the whole life cycle of plastics, with efforts to reduce, eliminate and ban plastics and problematic substances (additives and chemical products), including microplastics and single-use plastic.
France will host the next session of negotiations in Paris at the end of May 2023.
