“Check against delivery”
Ladies and gentlemen,
Thank you for having me here in the European Parliament today. As I step into my role as Commissioner, I’ve been thinking about what truly makes European industry unique. And the fashion and textiles sector perfectly illustrates our unique European selling points.
Our European clothing and textiles industry generated around 170 billion euros in turnover last year, providing livelihoods for over a million people across our continent. But what’s even more fascinating is how this industry is reinventing itself for the future. A future where quality, creativity and sustainability align.
Right now, we’re already seeing an incredible renaissance in sustainable practices. Traditional professions like cobblers or tailors are finding new life in our circular economy. Their skills are becoming increasingly valuable in repair services, while innovative rental and resale models are flourishing across Europe.
Moreover, the sector is increasingly addressing its negative environmental impacts. For example, through more sustainable sourcing, changing product design to improve recyclability, or by exploring reverse logistics for returned or used textile products.
But let’s also be honest about the challenges we face. One of the areas that require attention is the low recycling and collection rates of textiles in Europe.
Every year, we generate more than 12 million tonnes of textile waste. Only 22 percent is separately collected, and 8% is reused. These numbers tell us we have work to do.
That is why I look forward to finalising our work on the waste framework directive with the European Parliament and Council. The obligation for separate collection of textiles will make a tangible difference. As will the Commission’s proposal to introduce Extended Producer Responsibility schemes.
Dear friends,
What excites me most about the fashion industry is how deeply personal it is. Think about it – what we wear expresses who we are. It tells our stories and connects us to our culture.
You are the producer of those stories. You are the European brands that we wear with pride.
Together, we can show how sustainable choices can be a great opportunity. I’m therefore eager to hear and discuss your ambitions for sustainability, as outlined in the report that you will be presenting.
Also on our side, as the European Commission, we’re ready to take our responsibility. The EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles, launched in March 2022, is already making waves.
Only a couple of months ago, in July, the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation came into force. This is a powerful piece of legislation. It isn’t just about setting new standards – it’s about unleashing innovation and creativity in sustainable design. This matches your profile perfectly!
The upcoming delegated act on textiles will bring this regulation to life. I count on your support in making this legislation work for businesses, consumers, and the environment.
In parallel, we will continue our work on the transition to a truly circular economy in Europe across industries and sectors. We will work on the issues that hold us back today. Many of these have been highlighted by Draghi, Letta, and others.
As a new Commissioner, I want you to know that my door is always open. The transition to sustainable fashion isn’t just about regulations – it’s about collaboration, innovation, and shared vision.
Let’s use this morning to start a conversation about how we can work together to make European fashion a global leader in innovative and sustainable design.
Thank you, and I look forward to our discussion.
