Brussels, 10 December 2024
The EU Commission today adopted a decision to disburse €50 million (€45 million in loans and €5 million in grants) to Moldova. The disbursement will take place in the coming days. This will be the fifth and final tranche of ongoing macro-financial assistance (MFA) for Moldova since its launch in July 2022. In total, with this latest payment, Moldova received a total amount of €295 million under this MFA-specific operation.
This financial support will help Moldova cover part of its financing needs for 2024 and ensure macroeconomic stability, while supporting its reform agenda in line with the ongoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.
The Commission will release this aid after concluding that the country fulfils all the political conditions agreed with the EU. Moldova, for example, has strengthened the rule of law, by making progress towards the finalisation of the prior approval procedure for the self-governing bodies of the judiciary. Progress is also being made in the fight against corruption, by defining the competences of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office and the National Anti-Corruption Centre for the investigation of high-level corruption cases. The country also continues to fight the informal economy by adopting the 2022-2026 Employment Agenda and carrying out targeted actions to combat undeclared work. In addition, Moldova has strengthened its energy sector by increasing its workforce and strengthening expertise within the Ministry of Energy and the National Center for Sustainable Energy.
The MFA is part of the EU’s broader efforts to support Moldova in the face of the multiple challenges that have arisen in recent years and to help the country move forward on its European trajectory.
