The European Commission has decided today to appoint as Deputy Director-General for its Directorate-General for Trade (DG TRADE). This Commission department manages EU policy on trade with countries beyond the EU’s borders.

Leopoldo Rubinacci, an Italian national, will draw on his 25 years of experience in designing and implementing trade policies as well as his involvement in international trade negotiations. Throughout his career, he has also acquired advanced communication, representation and management skills.

Leopoldo Rubinacci is currently Director for ‘resources, interinstitutional relations, communication and civil society’ in DG TRADE, after taking on the role of Director for ‘Trade Defence’ where he enforced the main autonomous EU legislation to ensure a level playing field in international trade. Prior to that, he headed three units in the same department in charge of ‘Investment’, ‘Resources and strategic planning’ and ‘Bilateral relations with Russia, Ukraine, Commonwealth of Independent States countries and trade aspects of enlargement’. Before joining the Commission’s Directorate-General for Environment in 1995, he was an auditor and management consultant in the private sector.
