The European Commission has decided today to appoint Nils Behrndt as Deputy Director-General for its Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers (DG JUST). This Commission department is responsible for EU policy on justice, consumer rights and gender equality.

Nils Behrndt, a German national, brings with him a sound knowledge of justice and consumer policies, advanced negotiating skills, excellent management skills and a strong strategic planning capacity. Nils Behrndt is currently Acting Deputy Director-General in DG JUST and is in charge of several proposals concerning the digitalisation of justice and consumer policy. Prior to that, he led the ‘Consumer Policy’ directorate in the same department.

Previously he served as Head of Cabinet of Commissioner Neven Mimica, in charge of International Cooperation and Development, and previously Consumer Policy. He also was a Member of Cabinet of ‘Health and Consumer Policy’ Commissioners John Dalli and Tonio Borg and ‘Enterprise and Industry’ Vice-President Günter Verheugen. Before joining the Commission in the Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry in 2000, he worked as a lawyer in Germany.
