The European Commission has decided today to appoint Elies Messaoudi as Principal Adviser for its Secretariat-General.

The Secretariat-General is responsible for the overall coherence of the Commission’s work, both in shaping new policies, and in steering them through the other EU institutions. In doing so, it supports the entire Commission. Elies Messaoudi will represent the Commission in Coreper I.

The French national will draw on his in-depth political knowledge and wealth of inter-institutional experience, including in Council procedures. Elies Messaoudi has been working in the Secretariat-General since 2010. He is currently the Commission Antici Counsellor, supporting the work of the Commission Representative in Coreper II (the Council’s main preparatory body), and also coordinating the work for the preparation of European Council meetings.

He previously occupied the position of Policy Assistant to the European Commission’s Secretary-General Catherine Day and Alexander Italianer and was deputy Head of Unit ‘Policy Coordination, Internal Market & Competitiveness’. Prior to joining the Commission in 2000, within the Directorate-General for Internal Market and Services, he worked as Professor Assistant at Groningen University in the European law field. He graduated from the College of Europe and Pantheon Sorbonne University.
