Brussels, 20 March 2023

The Commission approved an investment of more than €124 million from the European Regional Development Fund for the 2014-2020 programming period for the construction of a 253 km-long section of a gas transmission pipeline between Leśniewice and Wronów in the Masovian, Łódzkie and the Lubelskie regions, in Poland. This section is part of the more than 300 km-long gas pipeline running from Gustorzyn to Wronów.

This project is included in the 4th list of projects of common interest (PCIs) and is part of the North-South Corridor in Eastern Poland, an important part of a wider system of gas interconnections in Central-Eastern and South-Eastern Europe.

This wider system includes the connections to the Baltic Pipe (linking it with Denmark) and to the LNG terminal in Świnoujście, enabling supply to the gas consumption areas in the Central and South-Eastern part of the country, and exports to neighbouring countries through interconnectors with Lithuania, Slovakia and Ukraine.

The project will contribute to Poland’s energy security by decreasing the country’s dependence on Russia’s gas imports. It will also play a vital role for the whole EU by increasing the security and diversification of gas supply while contributing to creating an integrated and competitive energy market, in line with the objectives of the REPowerEU Plan.

It is expected to be completed by December 2023.

Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, said:

“This project is a concrete example of Cohesion Policy support to energy security in Europe. It will significantly contribute to Poland’s energy security by diversifying the sources of gas, and will enable gas exports to Lithuania, Slovakia and Ukraine. It is a concrete symbol of EU solidarity between EU Member States and Ukraine, enhancing connections and improving our overall security.”
