29 research groups have received grants from the European Research Council (ERC) worth €295 million in total, to address challenging multidisciplinary research areas: the secrets that Greenland’s melting ice hide; how the sense of space, hierarchy and ownership is hardwired in our brains; promising pathways for our wellbeing respecting the planetary boundaries; and more.
Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, said:
“These new grants will enable scientists to join forces and follow their curiosity together across disciplinary boundaries. They are set to gain insights that will help us understand the world around us and to face future challenges. Congratulations and good luck to all the grantees!”
Almost 360 proposals entered the first ERC Synergy Grants call under the EU’s Horizon Europe programme. This €295 million funding will help groups of two to four outstanding researchers bring together complementary skills, knowledge and resources in one ambitious project. The funded projects involve 105 principal investigators who will carry out their research at universities and research centres in 19 countries across Europe and beyond. The grants, each worth around €10 million, will help create some 1,000 jobs for postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, and other staff in the grantees’ research teams. More information is available in this ERC press release.
