The European Union commends the Government of Singapore for announcing the repeal of Section 377A of the country’s Penal Code, which criminalises sex between men.
Over the last 10 years, we have seen signs of progress to decriminalise homosexuality worldwide. Yet, violence, discrimination and exclusion because of sexual orientation and gender identity persist.
Equality and the respect for dignity and human rights are core values of the EU, enshrined in Article 2 of the Treaty of the European Union.
The European Union will continue to promote the repeal of laws that discriminate against and put LGBTI persons at risk.
