Today, the European Commission has appointed Ana Carla Pereira as Director ‘Equality and non-discrimination’ at the Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers (DG JUST). This Commission department is responsible for EU policy on justice, consumer rights and equality. This decision takes effect on 1 December 2024.
Ana Carla Pereira, a Portuguese national, brings a distinguished 26-year career, including 22 years at the European Commission, marked by her unwavering commitment to employment, skills and social policies. She has cultivated profound expertise in promoting adequate working conditions, social inclusion and addressing inequality, underpinned by her extensive leadership experience and exceptional abilities in communication, networking, and negotiation. These skills have enabled her to build strong collaboration with high-level public and private stakeholders, making her a driving force behind initiatives aimed at fostering access to quality employment and combating social inequalities.
Currently, Ms Ana Carla Pereira serves as a Cabinet Expert to Commissioner Nicolas Schmit, overseeing Jobs and Social Rights. In her previous roles, she spearheaded critical projects as Head of Unit at the Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs, and Inclusion (DG EMPL) and the Directorate-General for Education and Culture (DG EAC), where she played a leading role in modernising social protection systems and advancing skills and qualification policies across the EU. Her career at the Commission began in 2002 as a Policy Officer at DG EMPL, where she contributed to the implementation of the European Social Fund, further solidifying her expertise in policies that promote equality and social cohesion.
