Today, the European Commission has decided to appoint Barbara Bonvissuto to the function of Director ‘Ecosystems III: Construction, Machinery and Standardisation’ at its Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (DG GROW). This Commission department is responsible for developing and managing policies relating to the internal market for goods and services; industrial policy and competitiveness; policies to support SMEs and foster entrepreneurship. This decision takes effect on 1 December 2024.
Barbara Bonvissuto, an Italian national, brings over 23 years of distinguished professional experience to her new role, including nearly 15 years in management positions at the European Commission. Renowned for her exceptional leadership and strategic planning capacity, she is highly regarded for her ability to craft innovative policies and implement results-oriented strategies that drive tangible outcomes. In her new capacity, she will leverage her comprehensive expertise across a broad spectrum of EU policy areas, particularly in the Single Market and Industrial Policy, as well as her extensive experience in interinstitutional and international negotiations. As she assumes this new role, Ms Bonvissuto’s blend of expertise, leadership acumen, and commitment to excellence is expected to contribute significantly to the Directorate’s strategic priorities and the advancement of the EU’s policy agenda.
Ms Bonvissuto has already held managerial roles within DG GROW, serving as both Head of Unit and Deputy Director in two distinct directorates: ‘Ecosystems III: Construction, Machinery, and Standardisation’ and ‘Strategy and Economic Analysis’. In these capacities, she oversaw the development and implementation of policies aimed at bolstering the competitiveness and innovation capacity of the machinery and equipment ecosystems and helping EU industry to benefit from the integration in international value chains. In addition to her extensive professional achievements, Barbara Bonvissuto holds a PhD in European Law, which underscores her profound understanding of the legal and regulatory frameworks that underpin EU policymaking. She joined the Commission in 2001 as a policy officer.
