Brussels, 26 November 2024

Today, the European Commission has appointed Stina Soewarta as Director ‘General Affairs’ at the Directorate-General for Competition (DG COMP). This Commission department works to ensure that all companies compete equally and fairly on their merits within the single market, to the benefit of consumers, businesses and the European economy as a whole. This decision takes effect on 1 December 2024.

Ms Soewarta brings over 30 years of distinguished professional experience, including 26 years with the European Commission, covering a broad range of policy areas. Her expertise encompasses competition policy – particularly leading enforcement in State aid cases and conducting economic analysis – as well as energy policy, development, and international partnerships. She possesses a deep understanding of market dynamics and EU regulatory frameworks. At the Commission, her managerial accomplishments include leading the Commission’s Representation in Copenhagen through the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic, successfully navigating complex communication dynamics. She also headed teams focused on both digital and competition policy, with a particular emphasis on law enforcement aspects. These qualifications make her exceptionally well-suited to provide strategic leadership for the Directorate, contributing to policy development and legislative initiatives.

Stina Soewarta, a Danish national, currently serves as Head of Cabinet for the Executive Vice-President for A Europe Fit for the Digital Age and Competition. Prior to this role, she held several management positions, including Head of Unit at the Directorate-General for Human Resources and Security (DG HR) and the Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER). Formerly, she was also Member of the Cabinet for former Commissioner for Energy and for Development Andris Piebalgs. Before joining the European Commission in 1998, Ms Soewarta served in the Danish national administration.
