Moscow/Washington DC, 4 June 2025
The Russian and U.S. readouts of the latest Trump–Putin call offer sharply contrasting narratives. While Trump stressed urgency on Iran and framed the call as a security discussion, Moscow emphasized Ukraine’s alleged provocations, ongoing diplomacy, and broader geopolitical coordination. Their messages overlap—yet diverge significantly in tone, scope, and political framing.
Tone and Framing
The U.S. readout, presented as a personal statement by Donald Trump, emphasizes urgency, security threats, and mutual alignment on the issue of Iran’s nuclear program. The Russian readout, delivered through Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov, adopts a formal, diplomatic tone and frames the conversation as a constructive, multipolar exchange—emphasizing ongoing diplomacy with Ukraine and potential global coordination.
Ukraine Conflict
Both versions acknowledge Ukraine as a key topic. However, Trump reports that Putin “very strongly” said he would have to respond to recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian military airfields and docked bombers—implying an imminent military retaliation. Strikingly, the Russian account does not mention this threat at all. Instead, it focuses on accusing Ukraine of terrorism and highlights the Istanbul talks as “productive,” painting Russia as the responsible actor avoiding provocation.
Iran Nuclear Talks
Here, there is partial alignment. Both accounts agree that Iran’s nuclear ambitions were discussed and that Trump encouraged Russia’s involvement in pushing Iran toward a resolution. However, Trump’s readout is sharper, stressing that “time is running out” and that Iran is “slowwalking” its decision—phrasing absent in the Russian version, which downplays urgency.
Additional Issues and Scope
The Russian readout includes broader geopolitical topics not mentioned by Trump: the India–Pakistan conflict, Middle East issues, and potential for reviving U.S.–Russia cooperation. It also praises Trump’s special envoy Steven Witkoff, absent from the U.S. account. This suggests Russia aimed to frame the conversation as multifaceted and globally relevant, while the U.S. narrative focused narrowly on immediate threats.
Comment by Aide to the President Yury Ushakov on the outcomes of Vladimir Putin’s telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump
Aide to the President Yury Ushakov:
“Good evening, colleagues.
About an hour ago, the fourth telephone conversation between our President and US President Donald Trump concluded. In case you want to know, this time it lasted approximately 70 minutes.
What did the conversation begin with? Naturally, it began with a discussion of the situation around Ukraine. Vladimir Putin provided detailed information on the outcomes of the second round of direct Russian-Ukrainian talks in Istanbul.
It was emphasised that Ukraine tried to derail these talks by carrying out targeted attacks on entirely civilian targets and civilians on direct orders from the Kiev regime. These attacks unequivocally constitute an act of terrorism under international law and, in our view, the Kiev regime has essentially degenerated into a terrorist organisation. The Russian side did not fall for the provocations and, as you know, the second round has effectively taken place in Istanbul.
To reiterate, our President extensively covered the content and the outcomes of the talks and emphasised that, overall, these talks were productive. The corresponding memorandums exchanged hands and will be analysed in the capitals – Moscow and Kiev – and then, we hope, both sides can continue the talks.
Regarding the strikes on military airfields, this issue was also discussed. Donald Trump reiterated that Americans were not informed in advance about them.
Naturally, the leaders agreed to continue contacts on the Ukraine issue, both at the highest level and through other channels as well.
In addition to Ukraine, a number of international issues were discussed, with a focus on the stalled talks between the United States and Iran on the Iranian nuclear programme.
Donald Trump believes that Russia’s assistance may be necessary here, and he would appreciate it if Russia could work with the Iranian side accordingly.
Additionally, the Middle East was discussed, as well as the armed conflict between India and Pakistan, which has been halted with the personal involvement of President Trump.
Furthermore, the Presidents exchanged views on the prospects for restoring Russia-US cooperation in various areas, which, according to both Presidents, possess enormous potential.
In conclusion, both leaders characterised the exchange of views as positive and highly productive. President Trump and our President also confirmed their willingness to remain in constant communication. I would also note that both Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin highly appreciated the efforts of President Trump’s Special Envoy Steven Witkoff.
That is about all I can share about the outcomes of the telephone conversation.”

U.S. President Trump’s post on Truth Social and X
I just finished speaking, by telephone, with President Vladimir Putin, of Russia. The call lasted approximately one hour and 15 minutes. We discussed the attack on Russia’s docked airplanes, by Ukraine, and also various other attacks that have been taking place by both sides. It was a good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate Peace. President Putin did say, and very strongly, that he will have to respond to the recent attack on the airfields. We also discussed Iran, and the fact that time is running out on Iran’s decision pertaining to nuclear weapons, which must be made quickly! I stated to President Putin that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon and, on this, I believe that we were in agreement. President Putin suggested that he will participate in the discussions with Iran and that he could, perhaps, be helpful in getting this brought to a rapid conclusion. It is my opinion that Iran has been slowwalking their decision on this very important matter, and we will need a definitive answer in a very short period of time!
