Brussels, 21 November 2024
Budgetary control MEPs endorsed Iliana Ivanova‘s comeback as a member of the European Court of Auditors (ECA) for Bulgaria in a secret ballot on Thursday.
Iliana Ivanova is the current EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education, and Youth. Holding a Master’s degree in International Economic Relations, she previously served as Bulgaria’s member of the ECA from 2013 to 2023. Her nomination was backed unanimously by all 21 members participating in the vote.
The position of Bulgarian ECA member became vacant in September 2023 on Ms Ivanova appointment as EU Commissioner. On September 4, 2024, the Bulgarian Council of Ministers nominated her to return to the ECA for the period 2025–2030.
Next Steps
The full Parliament is set to vote on whether to endorse the committee’s recommendation during its next plenary session in Strasbourg, taking place from November 25–28.
Background
As stipulated in the EU Treaty, each Member State proposes a candidate to serve on the ECA. The Council of the EU, after consulting the European Parliament, adopts the list of members for a six-year term.
